FREDERICK B. BLACK
DEAD IN FRANKLIN
Grand Commander of Knights Templar Succumbs to Long Illness
Franklin, Pa., - Dec. 5. - FREDERICK BURD BLACK, fifty-five years old, grand commander of the Knights Templar of Pennsylvania, died tonight after an illness of several weeks. He had been a prominent Mason for many years and was elected grand commander in September.
Frederick Burd Black was born in Franklin, Pa., in 1864 and passed virtually all of his life in that city. When nineteen years old he entered th employ of the Atlantic Refining Co., in the Eclipse Oil Works, and remained with that concern until 1916, having filled the position of purchasing agent several years. In 1916 he engaged in the oil brokerage business with Cleveland men but the same year launched out on his own account with headquarters in Franklin. He became agent for the Conewago Refining Co., of Warren, Pa. And was western Pennsylvania representative of Fred G. Clark Agency, one of the oldest oil brokerage firms in the country.
Mr. Black became a Mason in Franklin in 1891, joining Myrtle Lodge, No. 316. He received other degrees in the next few years, becoming a Knight Templar in 1892. He was a member of Franklin Commandery, No. 44, and of the following other branches: Venango Lodge of Perfection, Oil City; Pennsylvania Council, Pittsburgh; Pittsburgh Chapter, Rose Croix and Pennsylvania Consistory, Pittsburgh.
He held the various offices of the Franklin Commandery between 1897 and 1900, being eminent commander two years. He was appointed division commander of Divisions No. 19 in June 1912, and was reappointed the following year. His elections to grand commandery positions were as follows: Grand junior warden in Philadelphia in 1915, grand captain general in Scranton in 1916, grand generalissimo in Pittsburgh in 1917, deputy grand commander in Williamsport in 1918, grand commander in Sunbury in 1919. He had been in office only a few weeks before being stricken.
Mr. Black was prominent in civic affairs and when Franklin became a city of the third class he was elected president of Select Council, a position he held three years.
He leaves a wife, who was Isabelle Barbour, sister of John B. Barbour, president of the Pittsburgh Stock Exchange, and one sister, Mrs. John Hannah of Sharon, Pa.

Allentown, Pa., Dec. 5.- The REV. JOHN P. MILLER, fifty- six years old, presiding elder of the Evangelical Church died today. He was ordained in Lebanon and had served in Bath, Port Carbon, Manheim, Slatington, Lebanon, two pastorates in Christ Church in Philadelphia, Lehighton, Allentown, Shamokin, Wilkes-Barre and Bangor.

Pittsburgh, Dec. 5,- The funeral of HENRY CLAY FRITH took place at the family residence, Clayton, at noon today, none but relatives and a few intimate friends of the family being present.
The Rev. Dr. Edward J. Van Etten, of Calvary Protestant Episcopal Church, stood beside the plain coffin with its one wreath of flowers as he read the services and the music was by Mrs. Christine Miller Clemson, of one of Mr. Frick's former business associates. Interment was in Homewood Cemetery
