All Walks of Life Invaded by Plague
Doctors, Soldiers, Business Men and City Employes (sic) on Death Roll
Toll of Victims Wide
Many Policemen and Firemen Die and Municipal Posts are Vacant.

Clergymen, soldiers, physicians, policemen, firemen and men in virtually every other walk of life are represented in the latest roll of death from epidemic influenza and pneumonia.

Captain B. F. Shivler, head of the explosives section of the Philadelphia ordnance office died yesterday at the University Hospital of pneumonia. He was taken ill Tuesday on his way to Pittsburgh. He was commissioned last June and since last April has made his home at Narberth with his wife and daughter.

Captain Shivler was a chemical engineer, formerly with the Seaboard Chemical Company, Newark, N. J. He was graduated from the Rochester Preparatory School and Rutgers College. He was born thirty-seven years ago in New Brunswick, N. J. His father George L. Shivler, an .. of Troy, N. Y. was one of the country's first signal corps telegraphers in the Civil War.

Senior Lieutenant Joseph F. Edwards, son of Mrs. R .. C. Edwards, 2119 Locust street, died Sunday at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York, of double pneumonia, following influenza. He was commissioned in the navy about eight months ago and stationed in New York. His mother and wife, who was Miss Marie Abel, of Baltimore, were with him when he died.

Lieutenant Edwards was a brother of Lieutenant Commander W. Atlee Edwards, of Admiral Sims's staff, and of First Lieutenant E. Baldwin Edwards, now in France with the engineer corps under General Atter .. y. He was a graduate of the Del .. y school and of Fordham University. He also studied in Paris. His father was the late Dr. Joseph F. Edwards, a well-known expert on sanitation, who died about twenty years ago. The lieutenant is survived by his wife and three children. He was thirty-six years old.

Lemuel Wentz of Olney died at Camp Dix, where he was teaching foreigners the English language. He had been a teacher in the Longfellow public school for several years.

Mr. Wentz, was twenty-six years old and a graduate of the Northeast High School, the School of Pedagogy and Temple University. He tried to enter active military service but was rejected for impaired vision.

David Dallam, Jr., a real estate broker, is dead at his home, 612 West Rittenhouse street, Germantown. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, in 1907, Mr. Dallam engaged in the real estate business with his father, D. E. Dallam, at 514 Walnut street. He is survived by a wife and a fifteen-month-old baby. He was a member of the Manufacturers' Club and the Union League.

The Rev. Henry J. Herrbrecht, curate at St. Ludwig's Church, Twenty-eighth and Master streets, died Sunday. He was thirty-six years old and was born in Alsace. He was ordained in 1904 and came to the United States where he worked among the Negroes in the south for two years. He was admitted to the archdiocese in 1911 and assigned to the Church of the Holy Ghost, South Bethlehem, where he was stationed for six years.

Katherine Welsh, fourteen years old, daughter of Mrs. T. Henry Dixon, died in her home in Chestnut Hill.

Mrs. Miriam Glanding Campbell, wife of Austin J. Campbell, 5154 Christian street, died in Brunswick, Ga., while nursing her husband. Burial will be made in Philadelphia. Mr. Campbell is advertising manager for a Market street store.

Mrs. Katherine O'Donnell, wife of Charles R. O'Donnell, borough treasurer of Clifton Heights, died Saturday. She was thirty-four years old and is survived by her husband and two daughters.

Mrs. Jacob Fitzwater Potter died in her home at Wyncote, Pa. She was the wife of Jacob F. Potter, president of Ridpath & Potter Company. She was thirty-six years old. Her husband and nine children survive.

Mrs. Mary Fleisher Rosenberg, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. B. W. Fleisher. 2301 Green street, died Saturday. She was the wife of Lewis S. Rosenberg, of Baltimore.

Arthur T. Eissing, son of Arthur J. Eissing, 5508 Whitby avenue, died at Camp Dick, Dallas, Tex. He was twenty-one years old and president and honor man of the class of 1918, University of Pennsylvania.

Miss Elizabeth M. Brannix, daughter of Thomas G. Brannix, a clerk in the marriage license office, City Hall, died at her home, 246 North Sixteenth street. She was preparing to go to France as a Y. M. C. A. worker. She was twenty-four years old and had been an assistant teller in the Commercial Trust Company.

Dr. Al Steele, one-time star quarter-miler at the University of Pennsylvania, died yesterday at his home in Germantown. His last race was in the 1916 Commercial Museum indoor meet when he ran with the relay team with Ted Meredith, Lockwood, and Kaufman. He was a member of the Germantown Boys' Club and was active in its athletics.

The policemen who succumbed were: House Sergeant Martin R. Clark, Fourth and Race streets station; William E. Lacy, of the Reserves, Eighth and Jefferson streets station; Frederick Hoffman, J., Third street and Fairmount ovenue (sic) station; Benjamin Kind, also of the Third street and Fairmount avenue station; Reserve Policeman John Burns; Michael Shortall, Twentieth and Berks streets station; Patrick J. Whalen, Twenty-sixth and York streets station.

William R. Gordon, a former policeman and son of Policeman Arthur Gordon, of the Belgrade and Clearfield streets station, died yesterday at Wissahickon Barracks, Cape May.

The firemen who died were: William J. McCann, Truck No. 7; George W. Paul, Engine Company 36 and Michael McHenry, Truck No. 10.

Mrs. Frances Poley, wife of Irwin Poley, an instructor in the Germantown Friends' School, died at her home, 724 Locust street, Germantown. Mr. Poley is seriously ill from influenza. They had been married a year.

Conrad Engel, an osteopath, died in his home, 2316 Fairmount avenue from influenza contracted while attending others afflicted.

The Rev. Emelius Duser, assistant rector of St. Bonifacius's Church, Howard and Diamond streets, died Saturday. He contracted the disease while making sick calls. Death occurred in St. Mary's Hospital. Father Duser was born in Germany in 1870, came to the United States in 1887 and was ordained in 1901. Before coming to Philadelphia he was in charge of a church in Baltimore.

Lieutenant Ellis Louis Griffith, United States army motor service, died Saturday night in the home of his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth S. Mehrer, 426 Jefferson avenue, Cheltenham. He was thirty-one years old and spent last winter at the motor training school, Rock Island, Ill. In June he was transferred to the proving station at Aberdeen, Md. He is survived by his wife. Lieutenant Griffith was a member of the Friendship Lodge, No. 400, Free and Accepted Masons and the Atlantic City Lodge of Elks.

Mrs. Hilda Smith, who has been employed as a stenographer in the Bureau of Water for several years, died Sunday night at her home, 5273 Ridge avenue.

Mrs. Richard H. Fairservice, formerly Miss Virginia Given, of Overbrook, died Saturday in the Beaver Valley Hospital, Beaver, Pa. She was married eighteen months ago to Lieutenant Fairservice, of the State Constabulary. Mrs. Fairservice contracted influenza while nursing one of her husband's men, Joseph Malloy, a member of the Junction Park detachment. Malloy died last week. The body was brought to Philadelphia for burial. She is survived by her husband, an infant child, a brother, Captain John E. Given, U. S. A., and a sister, Mrs. Joseph N. Nicholas, of Overbrook.

Morton L. Schamberg, artist and photographer, died Sunday in his apartments in the Hotel Lorraine. He will be buried today, the thirty-seventh anniversary of his birth.

Mr. Schamberg's studio was at 1822 Chestnut stret (sic). He was an exponent of futuristic art. Upon graduation from the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Schamberg studied for three years in the Academy of Fine Arts. He was art editor of the Punch Bowl at the University in 1906. He studied in Holland for a time.

Miss Mary P. Riley, thirty-one years, 1131 Richmond street, died last night in her home. She was teacher in the Longfellow Public School, Frankford, and founder of the Frankford Service Club for Soldiers and Sailors. Her sister, Miss Margaret Riley, twenty-nine years old, a teacher in the John Martin Public School, died last Friday. They are survived by their mother, Mrs. Mary Riley.

Chandler D. Richter Influenza Victim
Baseball Authority and Sporting Writer Dies in West Philadelphia

Chandler D. Richter, a well-known sporting writer and a recognized authority on baseball, died lat night of influenza at his home, 6023 Catharine street.

Mr. Richter was twenty-seven years old. While at the Central Manual Training School he was a star on the basketball and baseball teams. Following his graduation he played professional baseball in the Tristate and International Leagues. He left a promising career as a pitcher to take up studies at Brown University.

From that institution he entered the newspaper field as baseball editor of the Philadelphia Times. Upon the discontinuance of that publication he became associated with his father, Francis C. Richter, editor and founder of Sporting Life.

Later Mr. Richter became baseball editor of the Evening Public Ledger and later joined the Evening Bulletin. A year ago, he left the newspaper business to enter the automobile field. A few weeks ago he became associated with the Motor Transport Service of the American International Shipbuilding Corporation, with headquarters at Hog Island. He is survived by his parents, a wife, an infant daughter, two brothers and three sisters.
