Bryn Mawr Soldier Dies of Pneumonia in Merritt

Former Public Ledger Employe (sic) First Stricken With Grip

Private F. Benson Steed, formerly employed in the advertising department of the Public Ledger and the Evening Public Ledger, died yesterday at Camp Merritt, the victim of Spanish influenza. He was twenty-two years old and was the only son of Mr. And Mrs. Steed, 918 Old Lancaster pike, Bryn Mawr, Pa. Young Steed enlisted in May 1917, in Troop G. First Pennsylvania Cavalry and went with them to Camp Hancock, Ga. When the cavalry regiment was disbanded he was transferred to the hospital corps. While at Camp Hancock he met with an accident which resulted in a broken leg and broken collarbone and kept him from embarking for France with his comrades. He was transferred to Camp Merritt and on September 25 became ill with influenza. Pneumonia later developed. Private Steed was recommended for promotion to the rank of sergeant several weeks ago.
