John R. Bartlett Dead
Organizer of Many Big Corporations Dies at Monroe, N.Y., at 79
John R. Bartlett, some years ago a prominent figure in financial circles as an organizer of corporations, died on Tuesday at his home in Monroe, N.Y., in his eightieth year. Mr. Bartlett retired from active business in 1907, after the financial crisis. For thirty years before that he had been identified with many corporations, notably the British Oil and Cake Company, Limited, which he organized. This company embraced twenty-eight mills and twelve refineries of cottonseed and linseed oil and cake in Great Britain. This was the first large industrial combination organized in Great Britain or Europe by an American.
Jerome H. Eddy
Jerome H. Eddy, one of the oldest theatrical press agents in America, died yesterday morning at his home, 369 First Street, Brooklyn. Mr. Eddy, who was 83 years of age, had been ill for several weeks, following an accident, in which his leg was injured.
Mr. Eddy had been a press agent for more than forty years, and had continued at his work up to the time of his accident. He had done press work for Booth and Barrett, Mlle. Rhea, Joseph Jefferson, and many other stage stars. He was also the co-author of "The Village Postmaster," a drama produced a number of years ago.
Dr. J. Hervey Buchanan
Dr. J. Hervey Buchanan, 47 years old, died at his home in North Plainfield, N.J., last night following a blood transfusion made in an effort to save his life. He was a graduate of Peddie Institute, Princeton University, and Jefferson Medical College, and had practiced in Plainfield, N.J., since 1808. He was a member of several fraternal organizations, and composed a book of marches used in the degree work of the Knights of the Golden Eagle. Dr. Buchanan was a member of the American Medical Society, the Somerset County Medical Society, and the medical staff of the Muhlenberg Hospital of Plainfield.
William Herbert, head of the brokerage firm of William Herbert & Co., died yesterday at his home, 434 West Twenty-second Street, in his sixty-sixth year. Mr. Herbert attended New York University and then entered business as a member of the firm of Corlies, Macy & Co., stationers. He entered the brokerage business twenty years ago, and in 1908 formed the firm of which he was the head at the time of his death. Mr. Herbert was a member of The Players, Stock Exchange Luncheon, and other clubs. He is survived by his wife and four sons, Lieutenant Wyman Drummond Herbert of the 105th Artillery, William Hedenberg Herbert, Lieutenant Philip Sidney Herbert, and Ensign James Herbert, U.S.N.
James Campion, 81 years old, was found dead yesterday afternoon in his home, Jamaica, L.I.
George O. Smith, 36 years old, a real estate dealer in Brooklyn, died on Thursday at his home, 254 Cooper Street, Brooklyn.
Mrs. Genevieve Schaefer, 44 years old, wife of John A. Schaefer, died at her Summer home in Bayville, L.I., on Thursday.
Dennis O'Shea, for forty-six years employed by the Lackawanna Railroad, died on Thursday at his home in Washington, N.J. He was 74 years old.
Mrs. Sophia Virginia Beach, widow of Ottol Bluhm of Nutley, N.J., died on Thursday night at her home. Because of the war she had taken legal means to assume her maiden name of Beach.
Mrs. Sarah Levy, wife of Morse Levy, a cigar manufacturer, and a resident of Brooklyn nearly all her lifetime, died at her home, 3,120 Clarendon Road, Flatbush, on Thursday. She was born in England sixty-one year ago.
Mrs. Frances Susanna Abbott, wife of Dr. Francis Spalding Abbott, a retired physician, who is nephew of the Rev. Dr. Lyman Abbott, died at her Summer home is Lake Placid, N.Y., on Thursday. She was in her seventy-second year.
William John Colby, for many years with H. B. Claflin & Co. and a member of Tyrian Lodge, No. 618, F. and A. M., and Morton Commandery, No. 4, Knights Templars, died on Wednesday at his home, 458 Miller Avenue, Brooklyn, aged 54 years.
Mrs. Freda Staples, a former actress and mother of Eva Staples, who is a member of the "Do Your Bit" company, now playing in Chicago, died in St. Joseph's Hospital on Thursday, and the funeral services will be held this afternoon in the chapel at 712 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn. She was 37 years old and the widow of Albert Staples.
Mrs. Jane C. Hobley, a widow of Albert Hobley, who was a manufacturer of silk ribbons and women's dress trimmings, died on Thursday at her home, 110 Wilson Street, Brooklyn, aged 86 years. Mrs. Hobley was the oldest member of Calvary P. E. Church. She is survived by a son, Alfred T. Hobley, who was Sheriff of Kings County in 1908 and 1909, and a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Fee.
James Gelson, for forty-four years in the employ of The Brooklyn Eagle and for many years foreman of the cylinder press-room of the job department of that paper, died yesterday at his residence, 240 Gates Avenue, Brooklyn. He was 50 years old. His father, the late Patrick J. Gelson, had also been employed on The Eagle for fifty-one years. Mr. Gelson was one of the organizers of the International Printing and Pressmen's Union and Secretary and Treasurer of the Old-Time Printers' Association. He was a Past Regent of De Witt Clinton Council, No. 419, R. A.
