Obituaries - NJ - 1901 - Charles B. Ellis
|
Charles B. Ellis, for over half a century a resident of Freehold, died at that place on Monday of last week, aged 67 years. He had been in failing health for three years and since last December he had been confined to the house.
Mr. Ellis was the son of Catherine Vanderveer and Rowland A. Ellis and was born at what is now known as Lincroft. When he was fourteen years old he went to Freehold to work in the store of B. & C. D. Throckmorton and afterward he worked for Cowart & Perrine. In 1851 his father engaged in the butcher business at Freehold and three years later he was taken into partnership in the business. Upon the death of his father in 1878 he came into full possession of the business. The business was sold to Carson & Emmons in 1890 and Mr. Ellis retired.
Mr. Ellis was married in 1866 to Miss Elizabeth Bowne, daughter of William C. Bowne. She survives him and he also leaves two sons, William B. and Rowland A. Ellis, both of Freehold. A sister, Mrs. Martha Conover of Freehold also survives him.
