A Suicide At Long Branch
Michael Bernstein of Long Branch, aged 22 years, committed suicide on Monday of last week by taking a dose of carbolic
acid. Bernstein was a stage driver at Long Branch for a number of years. Recently he gave up the stage business and
secured an option on a stationery business at New York. He paid $50 to close the deal and a firm in New York was to
loan him $400. He went to New York on Monday to close the deal, but he was unsuccessful in securing the loan. He returned
home in a despondent frame of mind and went at once to his room. In a few minutes his mother detected an oder (sic) of
carbolic acid, and on going to his room she found him lying on the bed, with an empty vial by his side. A doctor was
summoned but before the doctor arrived Bernstein was dead. He was unmarried and lived with her (sic) mother.
