Obituaries - NJ - 1901 - John S. Whitlock
|
John S. Whitlock of Matawan, for many years a resident of Morganville, died on Thursday, January 10th, aged 89 years. Death was due to a general
breaking up of his health. He was run down by a wheelman about a year ago while crossing a street at Matawan and he never fully recovered from the
shock. He was born on the Whitlock homestead at Morganville and lived there until six years ago, when he moved to Matawan. He married Mary
Vanderbilt and four children were the result of their union. The surviving children are Mary Whitlock, who kept house for him, and John
Whitlock of Matawan.
Mr. Whitlock was at one time the largest fruit grower in Monmouth county. He was specially interested in the growing of new varieties of small
fruits. This was before the advent of early fruit from the South and Mr. Whitlock made considerable money. In one week in the year 1872 he
sent strawberries to market to the amount of over $2,000, getting as high as fifty cents a quart for them. He united with the Brick church
at Bradevelt 53 years ago and for many years was one of the most liberal contributors to the church and one of its most active members. He
and his wife joined the church at the same time and their four children were baptized on that occasion.
