Killed By A Train

Mother and Daughter Killed at West Ocean Grove

Mrs. Cornelius Matthews of Hamilton, in Wall township, and her daughter Mary, aged twelve years, were struck by a train yesterday morning at the New York and Long Branch railroad crossing at West Ocean Grove. Mrs. Matthews was instantly killed and her daughter died a few hours later at the Long Branch hospital.

The Matthewses have a truck farm at Hamilton. Every morning Mrs. Matthews and her daughter take a wagon load of vegetables to the hucksters at Asbury Park. Their route takes them across the railroad crossing at West Ocean Grove. There are gates at the crossing but the gateman is on duty only from six o’clock in the morning till ten o’clock at night. Mrs. Matthews and her daughter reached the crossing yesterday morning before the gateman was on duty for the day. A building along the track shuts off a view of south-bound trains. The horse was in the middle of the track when it was struck by a Central railroad freight train going south. Mrs. Matthews and her daughter were carried nearly a quarter of a mile on the cowcatcher of the engine. Mrs. Matthews’s skull was crushed and her body was terribly mangled. The girl remained in the wreckage of the wagon as it was carried along and she was not so badly mangled. She received internal injuries from which she died at the Long Branch hospital a few hours later. The horse was ground to pieces and the wagon wrecked. Coroner Flock of Long Branch has empaneled a jury and will hold an inquest.

Besides a husband Mrs. Matthews leaves four children. The oldest child is eighteen years old and the youngest is three years old. She also leaves a stepson, John Matthews of Asbury Park.
