New Jersey Obituaries - 1899 - Col. Elwyn S. Green

Col. Elwyn S. Green, who for many years was engaged in the real estate business at Long Branch, died at Asbury Park on Saturday, October 7th, aged 65 years. Death was caused by paralysis. Col. Green was the son of Elizabeth and General James Green and was born at what is now known as Hollywood. He married Miss Jane Ann Thompson of New York, who died three years ago . Three children were the result of their union. They are J. Elwyn Green and Minnie and Louise Green of Long Branch. He also leaves a brother and a sister. They are Dr. J. O. Green of Long Branch and Mrs. Hannah Elizabeth Smock of Red Bank.

Col. Green conducted the Bath hotel at Long Branch a number of years. This hotel was burned down about thirty years ago and caused Mr. Green a loss of $60,000. After the destruction of the hotel Mr. Green went to Florida and conducted a hotel there a number of years. He returned to Long Branch in 1871 and engaged in the real estate and insurance business. In politics Col. Green was a Democrat and was assessor of Ocean township for a number of years. He also served as commissioner of Long Branch. He was recently appointed by Governor Voorhees one of a committee of three to select a site for a sailors' burying ground near Long Branch.
