New Jersey Obituaries - 1899 - Richard Oliver
Richard Oliver of the Phalanx died last Thursday, aged 64 years. His death was caused by typhoid
malaria and a complication of diseases. Mr. Oliver was born at Durham, England. He came to this
country in 1857 and settled at the Phalanx. During the civil war he was employed by the government
in constructing bridges, converting churches and outbuildings into hospitals, building stockades, etc.
At the close of the war he established a canning factory at the Phalanx which he conducted up to the
time of his death.
Mr. Oliver was an ardent Republican but took no active part in politics. He leaves a widow, two
daughters and a son. The children are Mrs. A. J. Bray of the Phalanx, Mrs. George Ames of California,
and Charles L. Oliver.
