New Jersey Obituaries - 1899 - Samuel Gravatt

Samuel Gravatt of Freehold died last Thursday of Bright’s disease, aged 72 years. He was the son of Nancy Bowman and Samuel Bravatt and was born at Clarksburg. He took a great deal of interest in public affairs and had held several public offices. He was freeholder from Millstone township for two terms and had also been collector of that township. Mr. Gravatt married Lydia Johnson when about 23 years of age. She died and in 1888 he married Mrs. Anna VanHorn, who survives him. He leaves seven children by his first wife. They are Mrs. Mary A. Clayton of Turkey, Mrs. E. J. Bruton of Trenton, Mrs. Georgianna Ely and Mrs. Florence Parker of Ely, Mrs. Ellen Forman of Sweetman’s Lane, John R. Gravatt of Belmar and William W. Gravatt of Cassville. He leaves also a brother and two sisters-Mrs. Lynda M. Davison of Manasquan, Mrs. Sarah A. Frake of Clarksburg and William S. Gravatt of Asbury Park.
