Mrs. Margaret Butler of Long Branch is in the county jail at Freehold, charged with killing her daughter
Nellie. According to the story told by Mrs. Butler’s eldest daughter Margaret, Nellie and her mother got
in a quarrel on Friday night. Nellie threw cups and saucers at her mother and Mrs. Butler lost her patience
and threw a lighted lamp at her daughter. The lamp struck the girl full in the face. It exploded and her
clothing was set on fire. She was horribly burned. She was taken to the Long Branch hospital for
treatment, but her injuries were such that she died the next day.
