New Jersey Obituaries - 1899 - Stephen H. Kniffin

Stephen H. Kniffin died at Matawan on Tuesday of last week, aged 73 years. Death was caused by paralysis and heart trouble. Mr. Kniffin located at Matawan when he was very young and in early life ran a sloop from Matawan to New York with farm produce. For thirty years he was pilot of the freight propellors (sic) running between Matawan and New York, which occupation he continued until the organization of the Matawan propellor (sic) company.

Mr. Kniffin was twice married. His first wife was a sister of Justice I. W. Bedle. His children by his first wife are William Bedle of Matawan and Mrs. John Edward Smith of Englishtown. His second wife survives him. He leaves one son by his second wife, Halstead F. Kniflin of Matawan.
