New Jersey Obituaries - November 30, 1898 - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Conover) Slack

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Slack, wife of Dr. Clarence M. Slack, a surgeon of the Third New Jersey Volunteers, died at her home at New Brunswick on Monday of last week. She had been sick several weeks with nervous prostration. Mrs. Slack was born at Red Bank and was the daughter of Elizabeth Combs and Henry G. Conover. She was about 53 years old. Her grandfather was Thomas Combs, who lived in the house now occupied by Mrs. Eliza Hendrickson, and which then stood on the site now occupied by the Hendrickson block. She was married to Dr. Slack about thirty years ago and besides her husband she leaves two daughters, they being Mrs. William A. Moore and Miss Hattie Slack of New Brunswick.

Two sisters and a brother also survive her. They are Mrs. Eleanor Throckmorton, widow of the late Edmund Throckmorton of Red Bank; Emily, wife of Richard James of New York; and Thomas C. Conover of New Brunswick. Dr. Slack was with his regiment at Athens, Georgia, at the time of his wife's death, but he arrived home the following day. The funeral was held at New Brunswick on Thursday.
