New Jersey Obituaries - January 26, 1898 - Miss Sarah RutherfordA Woman Burned to Death
Miss Sarah Rutherford, who was employed as a domestic by Charles E. King of Asbury Park, was fatally
burned last Wednesday night. She was taken to the Long Branch hospital, where she died on Friday
morning. She set fire to the bedclothes in her room with a lighted lamp, while looking under the bed
to see if a man was concealed there. In trying to put out the fire the girl's clothing caught fire and
before help arrived she was in flames. The fire was put out with difficulty by Charles E. King, Jr., but
not until the girl was terribly burned. Mr. King's hands were also burned severely. The damage done by
the fire amounted to $50.
