New Jersey Obituaries - August 25, 1897 - Mrs. Teresa Leonard
Mrs. Teresa Leonard died at her home on the corner of Broad and Beach streets on Saturday. She was eighty years of age. She was the daughter of Jonathan McLean, and she was born on the McLean homestead in Middletown township. The place is now owned by W. Struthers Jones. When she was 24 years old she married John S. Leonard, son of Capt. William Leonard of Middletown township, who survives her. They began housekeeping at once on the farm on the bay shore, now owned by Joseph I. Thompson. This farm was a wedding present to the young couple from the groom's father. They lived on this farm until 1852, when they bought the Robert White place on the Rumson road. They sold this place in 1877 to Jonathan Cooper of New York and bought the property at the corner of Broad and Beach streets from Theodore F. White.
Mrs. Leonard was a member of the old Middletown Baptist church. When she moved to Rumson she joined the Red Bank Baptist church, and she remained a member of this church until her death. In 1891 Mr. and Mrs. Leonard celebrated their golden wedding. They had four children, of whom three are living. The living children are William E. Leonard and Mrs. Elizabeth Abbey of New York, and Miss Marie E. Leonard of Red Bank.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the house, the sermon being preached by Rev. William B. Matteson. The interment was at Fair View cemetery.
