California Obituaries - 1899 - John MaffeyDeath of a Pioneer
John Maffey, an early settler in El Dorado county, died in Nachville, Sunday, Feb 12th, at the age of
73 years. He was a native of Germany, but came to Zanesville, Ohio, when quite young, where he resided
until 1850. In that year he came to California and located in the neighborhood where he continued to
reside until his death. Like many a pioneer miner he remained unmarried. His only sister lives in
Zanesville, Ohio, the widow and family of one brother live in Cincinnati, and the widow of another
brother have for a long time resided in this county. Last Monday the neighbors all gathered at the
school house and at the grave to bid farewell to their long known friend. The funeral services were
conducted by Rev. C. C. Peirce, and the singers appropriately gave the best gospel hymns.
The sister-in-law and nephew of the deceased, now at home in this county, wish to return thanks to all who
have assisted them in their time of sorrow.
