Gloucester County Substitutes for the New Jersey Brigade in the Revolutionary War



A list of substitutes found for the different classes of the First Battalion of Gloucester County Militia commanded by Coll. Bodo Otto jr., enlisted to serve in the New Jersey Brigade till the first of January next. Description taken Sep 4, 1780.

  • Bateman, Moses of Capt. David Pearson's Company of Cumberland County Militia, fairish complexion, 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, well set.

  • Bateman, William of Capt. Levy Preston's Company of Cumberland County Militia, 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, well built, fair complexion.

  • Crouce, Adam of Capt. Penton's Company of Salem County Militia, swarthy complexion, 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, straight built.

  • Davis, Elijah of Capt. Elijah Davises Company of Cumberland County Militia, swarthy complexion, 17 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slim built.

  • Fields, Thomas of Capt. Felix Fislar's Company, brownish complexion, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, rather crooked built.

  • Lee, Joseph of George Pierce's Company of Militia of Gloucester County, fair complexion, 16 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high.
