Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, Richmond County, NY

Moravian (non-sectarian) Cemetery encompasses well over 100 acres and can be reached using a navigator and entering the street address of 2205 Richmond Road Staten Island, NY.   Staten Island is really all of Richmond County and was once named "Richmond."   There are a lot of "Richmond" this and thats so be sure to enter "Richmond Road" not, for example, Richmond Ave which will not get you there.

The cemetery is quite old, older than the United States!   It holds countless interments.   It is a beautiful setting and is still quite active.   Burial areas are broken into sections and in many place the plot numbers are visible, making searching quite a bit easier that it would otherwise be.   A map would be useful but we did not stop into the office to see if one was available - most likely it is.   Instead we chose to drive around looking for the older sections.   Obviously, many stones from the oldest sections are no longer legible.   That is unavioidable with a place as ancient as this.

Our primary focus with this cemetery is to obtain as many photographs as possible from legible stones.   We are not striving for completeness as there are just too many burials.   We did not photograph markers that are mostly illegible.   We figure that if you are really searching for someone we missed, you would be better off contacting the cemetery to conduct research for you.   The cemetery's web site,   MoravianCemetery.com, contains a price list with a line item for genealogical research but no rate was listed when we checked.

In order to keep things as orderly as possible and to make your searching easier, we have and will continue to list the section of the cemetery in which each phtograph was taken.   This will be an ongoing project so please don't expect huge volumes of your ancestors interred here to automatically be listed and photographed.   And we will not entertain specific requests for photographs at this time.   We hope that this work provides some help to you in your family history research.
