Tombstone Photographs and Transcription for Silverton Cemetery - Brick Blvd / Hooper Ave, Brick Township, Ocean County, NJ

Silverton Cemetery sits on both sides of Brick Blvd (a k a Hooper Ave.) near this rather busy road's intersection with Church Rd. (a k a Kettle Creek). From the Garden State Parkway southbound, take exit 88 and make a left onto Rt. 70 / from the north, make a right. Make a right at Rt 528, Cedar Bridge Ave and then a right onto Rt. 549, Brick Blvd. These are all major intersections, well marked and easy to find. The cemetery does not have any parking so we suggest that you make the right onto Church Rd. and park in the funeral home on your right. You will be near the western section of the cemetery.

The place almost seems like two distinct cemeteries though the most common surnames can be found in both sections. The older section of the cemetery is on the eastern side of Brick blvd and spans about an acre with about 200 burials. Many of the stones in this section have toppled and while it cannot be said that the grounds are poorly maintained, considerable effort is needed to right and reset these toppled stones. The older stones have, on the whole, aged fairly well with many inscriptions clearly discernible. The sign in this section states that the cemetery opened circa 1815 (see picture) and there are no apparent recent burials.

The older section, closest to the funeral home holds most of the most recent burials including some of apparently recent vintage. This section is also about an acre, perhaps two and while no more well maintained than the older section, it contains a few more trees and fewer toppled stones. We surmise that the cemetery must still be in use as the most recent interments were from the year 2000. The sign in this section states that it was opened circa 1887.
