Smock Burying Ground, Holmdel, Monmouth County, NJ
Located at the junction of Long Bridge Rd. and Willowbrook about a quarter to a half mile
south of Newman Springs Rd. (Rt 520) in Holmdel near the borders of Colts Neck
and Middletown, the
Smock Burying Ground sits in an open field. The stones are protected from moisture but
have wasted away from age. Only a few remain and of these, very view are readable.
We have included photos of all which we found and referenced Dr. Stillwell's Genealogical
Miscellany for the transcription of those which were illegible or not found. Stilwell apparently did not list
all stones - he commented as such in his work. Notable among the ommissions were those of the
Vanarsdale and Lane families though he did not give a reason for their ommission.
Stillwell did note that many stones were badly broken. We have included whatever we could find and
made conjecture only where we could find none of what was legible on the stones in Stillwell's work.
