Rumson Burying Ground, Rumson Road, Rumson, Monmouth County, NJ

Transcription:

The "Rumson Burying Ground" is located at the corner of Route 520 / Rumson Road and Conover Lane just past the eastern end of Rumson Country Club. Oral history had it that the grounds were used as a Quaker graveyard and were possibly a native american cemetery. One marker which was mostly below ground appeared to be of a style similar to those used in other Quaker cemeteries but the local group asserts no claim to the grounds.

Resposibility for maintenance of the grounds has been the subject of a recent lawsuit in which a McCarter descendant, George W. C. "Bill" McCarter, asserted that First Union National Bank had negligently run a trust fund created for the purpose. The suit was settled this year (2001) and the bank agreed to settle the suit by paying $20,000 which is the total of two amounts previously paid into the trust. Rumson Borough plans to invest the money and use the investment proceeds for the purpose of funding normal maintenance.

We made a casual inspection of the site and wonder how the interest from $20,000 can possibly hope to pay for the substantial amount of work the cemetery needs. The grounds' landscaping, while by no means in horrendous condition, could defintiely use some work. There are a number of very old trees which have been completely engulfed by ivy. At least one large tree is dead and should be removed lest its large, dead branches be blown down by a Nor'easter and destroy some of the headstones.

The headstones are, with a few exceptions, in very good condition though some are in dire need of a good cleaning. Some of the stones have significant damage from moss and mold. A few stones have ivy attached at or near the inscription. A Boy Scout project righted and reset numerous stones which had toppled through the years but there are a few more which have fallen and cracked. Some of these should be buried to preserve the integrity of the memorials they hold. A few including the one seen above have already been lost forever.

In closing, we hope Rumson is up to the task of maintaining this very important monument to the early history of North America in general and Monmouth County in particular. We applaud the efforts of Bill McCarter to hold the bank responsible for the trust fund and hope that these funds prove sufficient for the purpose.
