Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption Cemetery, Fords, Middlesex County, NJ
The area on the map where the Raritan river and bay, Garden State Parkway, NJ Turnpike, Route 440 (287), Route 9, and Route 35 all seem
to come together is a place containing a number of cemeteries. The Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption Cemetery lies on
a fairly quiet street in this area called North Florida Grove Road. To get there, exit Rt 9 at Rt 184 (aka West Pond Rd), heading
east, towards Perth Amboy. The second traffic light away from Rt 9 should be Florida Grove Rd. Turning left
puts you on North Florida Grove Rd and the cemetery is located on your left.
I believe the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption Cemetery lies within Fords which Wikipedia describes as "a census-designated
place and unincorporated area within Woodbridge Township." The church for which the cemetery is named lies within the city of Perth
Amboy. Florida Grove Road lies right on the border between Fords and Perth Amboy and the cemetery is physically just outside
of Perth Amboy on the Fords/Woodbridge side. If you have a navigator, try using Fords but if you are not successful, then try
both of the other two.
The cemetery holds about 2,000 or so burials. It remains open with some smallish areas
vacant and some very recent burials evidently having taken place there. There is a Magyar cemetery located directly adjacent to the
Ukrainian one so please, if you visit, make sure to check the signs next to the two driveways before wasting your time in the wrong
place!
There are some great names at both cemeteries and right before your eyes,
you can see Andrewshetsko / Andruziechko convert itself into "Andrews." Where varied spelling of seemingly same names appear next to each
other, we have tried to draw the connection for users of this site. Also, where it is not obvious whether one surname or another is
correct for a particular burial, we have tried to make sense of it or presented both names or spellings.
Most inscriptions are in English though some use the Ukrainian language and alphabet. I am unfamiliar with the Ukrainian
alphabet which is one of several variations of Cyrillic script. As such, I cannot in any way interpret some of the photographs we took
of tombstones. Photographs of these stones are presented below. If you, can help us out on any of these,
we would appreciate the help.
Note that there are a fairly large number of veterans of World War II within the cemetery. There is a seperate monument
for those who perished fighting the war. We have included the names of those on the memorial monument within the regular burials, listed
by surname. We hope this work is of value to you in your research or otherwise appeals to you.
