Holy Trinity Cemetery, Fords, Middlesex County, NJ

Holy Trinity Cemetery (Roman Catholic) lies at the junction of Florida Grove Road and Rt 184, W. Pond Road, in Fords, NJ, next to the Hess gas station opposite a 7-11 convenience store on one side and St. John Orthodox Cemetery on the other.   It is very close to Route 9 and easily accessible.   The area, while somewhat busy due to the proximity of major freeways, still seems rather serene and peaceful.   The yard is well maintained although we were told by a local that this is a recent development.   Previously the grounds, particularly towards the back, were quite overgrown.   Also, news story tell of some incidents in which small contractors have dumped refuse on the grounds, damaging the main gate.   As a result, gates are kept closed and chained, though accessible on foot.   Parking appears, at first glance to be an issue but there is a side street adjacent to the grounds with plenty of extra space should you desire to pay a visit.

The cemetery is medium sized, housing about five thousand burials.   We were unable to determine when this cemetery was opened but after walking the grounds, it appears to be around the turn of the 19th into the 20th century.   There are many eastern European, mostly Slovak, names to be found here.   The church is primarily Slovak but there appear to be some Czech, Polish names as well as some of other origins   The caretaker on location told us that when he started here, there were some issues with youths coming into the yard at night to do what youths do in a cemetery at night.   He approached some of these kids and showed them a group of graves with the surname "Dracula" and the problem seems to have cleared up.   Kids no longer come into the yard after dark!

Tombstones are in generally very good condition and many appear to have been visited by relatives recently.   Some of the children's grave marker have worn away and the caretaker told us there are some still covered by excessive growth in the back of the yard.   While photographing markers, we noted many visitors to graves during the lunch hour, with several bringing flowers and taking care of their loved ones' burial area.
