East Windsor Cemetery, East Windsor, Mercer County, NJ

East Windsor Cemetery sits along Windsor-Perrineville Road (CR 630), between Imlaystown Road and Whitcomb Road, and not far from the New Jersey Turnpike (Rt 95).   We used the following address in our GPS to find the cemetery: 790 Windsor Perrineville Road, East Windsor, NJ.   Some web sites list the cemetery as lying with Highstown but our understanding of the maps we reviewed is that it is in East Windsor which surrounds Hightstown.   Hightstown being north of the cemetery.   Despite its proximity to the Turnpike, the area is rural and definitely farm country.   We got spooked by a large grey fox trotting along a pathway at the back of the cemetery.   There is a large, lighthouse-like monument, visible from the roadway, which marks the graves of some Norton family who owned the farm, including the cemetery, at one point before the Ely's and Nortons created the cemetery company which now owns and maintains the grounds.

The cemetery was initially set aside by John Ely in the 1700s on his farmland.   East Windsor is one of the initial townships recognized by the state of New Jersey in the 1700s and boasts among its historical, albeit temporary, residents, Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, who also established a school in East Windsor.   The area has NJ historical significance and there are some older burials here along with quite a few new ones including many immigrants from Turkey, Albania and possibly other predominantly Muslim regions and countries.

We endeavored to photograph the entire cemetery as it is medium sized with perhaps 2,000 burials.   We took about 600 photographs and plan to complete the project in time.   What follows is a transcription of about a thousand or so of the readable markers with photographs of the tombstones.   Use the index below to locate these by surname and then, once you have found the individual you want to research, click on the link provided to view the tombstone photograph.
