Research Hint:
Many in the online genealogy community are aware of the benefits of conducting searches via
Google.
However many are not as aware that search results on Yahoo!, AOL and others have, for several years,
been substantially identical to those on Google. The reason for this is simple, Google
provided these sites with their results.
Recently Yahoo! unveiled its own websearch database. If you haven't
yet given it a test drive, numerous researchers have already said lots of good things about it. The
searches I have done have yielded quite different results from those I have seen on Google. As we
all know, it is often very difficult to track down the relevant online results. We think this new tool
from Yahoo! will be a tremendous resource.
Additionally, either coincidentally or in reaction to the new Yahoo! database, Google has dramatically
increased the number of web pages it indexes. Google claims that an additional 1 billion files
are now included in its search. I recently pulled out some pieces of my family tree to see if
I could locate any new information. I had searched these particular people numerous times over
several years without much success. The expanded Google database found numerous documents for
each.
