Texas Obituaries - 1999 - Lorraine Castro Camacho

"Grandma Camacho" 1917-1999 Our dear wife and mother has joined the heavenly angels. She was born in Austin to Francisco and Helen Castro. Her great-grandparents, Eulogio and Pilar Luna, came to Austin in 1872 and helped found the Mexican-American community.

Lorraine married Daniel C. Camacho on January 1, 1940 in Taylor, Texas. Mrs. Camacho worked at Zavala and Metz school cafeterias (1967-1979). She was politically and socially active in her community. Because of her involvement, she became known as Grandma Camacho. She volunteered most recently with the Reading is FUNdamental program. Lorraine was a member of Travis Chapter #472: Order of the Eastern Star, the Salvation Army Home League and her home was a McGruff safe house.

Awards she received: AISD Elementary School Volunteer of 1991, Fiesta Patrias 1991 Honoree, September 15, 1991 was proclaimed Lorraine Castro Camacho Day by the City of Austin. MABPWA Lifetime Achievement 1993 and AISD 1996 Hispanic Heritage Community Service Award. Many remember Lorraine as LaReyna (Queen) de Diez y Seis de Septiembre (1933 and 1935 in Taylor, Texas). Honoring her memory are husband, Dan Camacho: daughter, Dolores Wilcoxen (Rick): son, Danny Camacho; daughter Dolly Camacho-Watson; daughter, Darlene Camacho-Rosales; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Camacho and brother, Frank Castro, Jr. (Mary).

The family thanks St. David's Hospital staff, Dr, Mary Maxwell, Dr. Matthew Masters, Dr. Charlie Ross and Dr. Thomas Coopwood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Reading is FUNdamental of Austin. A wake will be held January 2, 2000, at Wilke-Clay-Fish (2620 S. Congress) at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be January 3, 2000, at Assumption Chapel (3650 S. I-H 35). Arrangemens by Wilke-Clay-Fish Fueral Home, 2620 S. Congress Avenue.
