S.S.THOMPSON, 87, FINANCIER, DIES
Retired Wholesale Grocer Devoted Later Activities to Philanthropic Work

SAMUEL S. THOMPSON, eighty-seven years old, retired financier, wholesale grocer and widely known philanthropist died last night at his home, 2029 Spruce street, following an attach of catarrhal pneumonia.

Mr. Thompson retired from active business more than ten years ago, but retained interest in virtually all his philanthropic activities. During his life he was an officer and director of more than twenty business and eleemosynary institutions. He was principally active in the wholesale firm of Mitchell, Fletcher & Co., of which he was a member.

Mr. Thompson at one time was president of the Hatboro National Bank, president of the Hatboro Willow Grove Turnpike Co. and director of the Rittenhouse Trust Co., Consolidation National Bank, Northeast Pennsylvania Railroad, Wholesale Grocers' Association, Northern Dispensary, Friends' Institute, Friends Historical Society, trustee of the Hatboro Library and for twenty-five years trustee of the State Hospital at Norristown.

Mr. Thompson was an Orthodox Friend. He was born in Chester county (sic), October 22, 1834, the son of Daniel Bernard and Mary Hayes Thompson, a direct descendant of Henry Hayes, who settled in Pennsylvania in 1705. Mr. Thompson was one of the founders of the Corinthian Lodge of Masons, a member of the Union League and the City Club.

Mr. Thompson's first wife, who was Annie I. Mitchell, died in 1872. He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Emma Lukens Hall Thompson, and three children; Miss Mary I. Thompson of Santa Barbara, Calif.; Mrs. Antoine Bournonville, and Justice M. Thompson, of Philadelphia. Mrs. Franklin Phillips, of Newark, daughter of Mrs. Thompson, is well known here.

In addition to his Spruce street home, Mr. Thompson had summer homes at Hatboro, Brooklawn and Pocono Manor.

The funeral will take place Friday afternoon, at 1 o'clock, from his Spruce street residence. Interment will be private.

  • WILLIAM R. WILSON, one time president off the National Iron, Steel and Heavy Hardware Association, died Monday in his home, 8133 Pine street, Fox Chase. Mr. Wilson, who was sixty-three years old, was a member of the firm of Wilson& Bates, jobbers in iron, steel and blacksmith supplies thirty-six years. He retired from business January 1, 1919.

    Mr. Wilson was born in this city, educated in the public schools and was graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He was in the drug business several years.

  • DR. JOHN LOUIS METZGER, JR., twenty-nine years old, 4511 East Thompson street, died yesterday in the Hahnemann Hospital of heart disease. He had been ill since last March.

  • WILLIAM C. LAIRD, an engineer on the Reading Railway for twenty-five years, died yesterday in the University Hospital. Mr. Laird, who lived at 196 East Evergreen street, Chestnut Hill, had been in poor health for four years. He was fifty-six years old, and is survived by his widow.
