Banker Falls Prey to Epidemic's grip

Nun Follows Sister to Grave Within Week From Deadly Malady
Prominent persons from Philadelphia and vicinity continue to be added to the influenza and pneumonia epidemic death list.
James L. Pequignot, head of the Philadelphia branch, National City Bank of New York, died in the University Hospital. He was thirty-nine years old and had been ill a year and a half, following a collapse from overwork during the first Liberty Loan drive. Influenza was the direct cause of death. Mr. Pequignot lived at Stonleigh court, Forty-sixth and Walnut streets.
Brother William, thirty-three years old, a member of the Christian Brothers, died in St. Mary's Hospital. He was stationed at St. Stephen's School, Broad and Butler streets. He was born in Mansfield O., March 21, 1885. At eighteen he entered the Christian Brothers. He was principal of the Most Precious Blood School.
Mrs. Emma Keilty, daughter of Assistant Director Baldwin, of the Department of Public Works, died at Oglethorpe, Ga. She was the wife of Major Robert E. Keilty.
Richard J. Monaghan, thirty-five years old, died in his home, 5144 Hazel ave. He was president of the Keystone Transportation Company and treasurer of the Gallagher & Burton Corporation. He was active in the Elks.
Dr. Samuel M. Brown, president of the S. M. Brown Optical Company, died at his home in Camden. He is survived by his widow and five children.
Ensign Jamard Zeckwer, thirty-three years old died at his home, 2127 Pine street. He was a son of Richard Zeckwer and a brother of Camille Zeckwer, a well-known musician. The ensign was a graduate in mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.
Sergeant Daniel A. Jacobs, of the Forty-sixth Balloon Company, United States army, died Saturday at Fort Omaha, Neb. His home was in West Philadelphia.
Miss Mary Rush, a nurse in the Northeastern Hospital, in another member of the nursing profesion (sic) to meet death in the epidemic. She was on a vacation when the epidemic arrived and returned to duty.
Two brothers yesterday dug the graves of three members of their family. The dead are Alexander Buchanan, forty; Thomas, his brother, twenty-three and Agnes, a sister, four, of 1730 South Dorrance street. Their brothers got boxes from Joseph Ward, a deputy coroner and took them to Mount Moriah Cemetery.
Ten leaders of labor organizations will go to Holy Cross Cemetery tomorrow to dig a grave from Edward McMahon, president of the Building Trades Council.
Mr. McMahon's widow is dangerously ill with influenza, as is a ten-year-old daughter Helen. An eight-year-old son, Edward, is recovering. They live at 2223 Fontain street.
Sister Mary Gertrude Junker was buried yesterday at Mates Misericordia Convent, Merion, Pa. She was the second daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Jules Junker to die within a week. Mr. Jules Junker was unable to attend the funeral owing to illness from influenza. Four brothers of the nun acted as pallbearers. She was thirty-two years old and had been in the convent twelve years.
Mrs. John C. Groome, chairman of the home relief division of the Emergency Aid, reports contributions are coming in steadily for the Emergency Aid influenza fund and the money is going directly to the relief of some of the many cases of real distress caused by the epidemic.
Mrs. Groome states there is plenty of use for all the money the committed con (sic) obtain and hopes that the contributions will continue. The total to date is $4644.
Former Magistrate Frank S. Harrison, 4629 Wayne avenue, died Monday night. He was a neighbor, schoolmate and ally of the late Israel W. Durham.
Mr. Harrison was born in Philadelphia in 1865 and was a graduate of the Central High School. He entered the office of the Receiver of Taxes in 1885. He resigned in 1890 to take a place in the City Treasurer's office. He took Durham's place as Magistrate when the latter was elected to the State Senate.
After a term as Magistrate, Mr. Harrison became a real estate assessor, which position he held for several years, after which he retired from politics. He moved from the Twenty-second Ward and engaged in the manufacturing business. He was associated with his brother-in-law, Alfred Woistenholme, in the firm of Alfred Woistenholme & Son, makers of worsted yarns.
Lieutenant Commander Lawrence townsend (sic), Jr., U. S. N., a former Philadelphian, died Sunday in Washington. He was a son of Lawrence Townsend, former United States Minister of Portugal and Belgium. He was at Annapolis from 1905 to 1909. He was commended for bravery at the capture of Vera Cruz by the United States forces in 1914. He led a landing party that cleared a nest of snipers from an old stone hotel. He had done special duty in the Balkans since the United States entered the war.
Commander Townsend was in charge of the party that seized the wireless plant at Sayville, L. I.
Herbert Williams, clerk in the stockroom of the Federal food administration, died at his home is Spring City on Saturday of pneumonia, which developed after influenza. He was twenty years old.

Philadelphia Men Fell Bravely Fighting Foe On Soil of France
One of the Killed, a Scion of German Ancestry, Wrote That No One Would Be Afraid to Die Fighting a Hun.
Private Henry Eckert, 1618 North Lawrence street, reported killed in today's casualty list, is the son of the late Henry Eckert, a Civil War veteran, whose family came form Hanover, Germany, to escape military service. Eckert was thirty-one years old and worked as a finisher in the Stetson hat factory. After a short time at Camp Meade he went to Camp Gordon last October and was assigned to Company M., 328th Infantry. He sailed overseas in April. A letter from Eckert dated September 7 said he was helping to guard a paper mill in a town captured from the Huns, who were on the run. "I have been under fire several times," he wrote, "but no bullet has yet had my name on it. If everybody knew the reports that reach us how the Germans treat civilians and prisoners nobody would be afraid to die fighting the Hun. It is a wonder that the German people haven't got wise as to the kind of ruler they have in Germany before this."
Private John E. Kelly, 862 North Forty-seventh street, listed as killed, is the son of Mrs. Sarah Kelly. He was twenty-six years old and enlisted in the old Sixth Regiment August 2, 1917, in the Supply Company. At Camp Hancock he was assigned to the 111th Infantry. A telegram from the War Department announced that he was killed in action July 18.
Eckert was a member of Lincoln Camp, No. 39, Sons of Veterans. Two brothers are in the next draft.
Lieutenant Harold A. Fahr, 155 East Duval street, Germantown, listed as killed wrote to his wife that he had been gasses, but was recovering. He was an officer in the 109th Infantry, Company G.
Private John Yaiak, reported dead of wounds, is a Russian Pole, unnaturalized, but anxious to fight in the cause of world freedom. He was drafted from Germantown and inducted into the army last October. His sister, Miss Amelia Yaiak, lives at 2327 Ridge avenue.
Thomas J. Shaw, reported missing, enlisted in the old Third Regiment a few days after war was declared. He went to France last May with Company M of the 110th Infantry. He lived at 2340 Tasker street.
Arthur P. Byrnes, reported killed in action, lived at Harrison, N. J. His four brothers are also in service and one sister is an army nurse. He enlisted when the old Third Regiment was sent to the Mexican border. He is a member of Company I, 110th Infantry, and had been in some hard fighting at Chateau Thierry.

James H. Gay Victim of Heart Disease.
Recently Appointed County Commissioner and Retired Manufacturer Dies Suddenly.
After holding office for only one week, James H. Gay, recently elected a Council Commissioner, died early yesterday morning at his home, 345 Pelham road, Germantown. Death came suddenly, due to heart disease. Mr. Gay was sixty-five years old.
A week ago yesterday Mr. Gay was sworn in on his new post by Judge F. A, .. Bregy. He was elected by the Board of Common Pleas Court Judges on October .. suffering with a cold, he had been confined to his home for five days. His condition, however, was not considered serious.
Mr. Gay was a retired carpet manufacturer of Kensington, formerly the head of John Gay's Sons, Inc., Howard and Norris streets. Serving as a director of the Union Traction Company and of the Fifth and Sixth Streets line, he was active in local street
Railway affairs. He was vice president of the Hayes Mechanics Home, a member of the Union League and some years ago was a member of the Board of Port Wardens, and
the Board of Inspectors of the Eastern Penitentiary.
A widow, two sons and two married daughters survive Mr. Gay. One of his sons, James H. Gay, Jr., is a first lieutenant in the Thirtieth Infantry, in France. He was wounded in the second battle of the Marne but recuperated and returned to the .. line. The younger son, John Gay, is attending the marine corps officers' training camp at Quantico, Va.

David Ewing
David Ewing, well known among Philadelphia bankers, died Saturday, at the age of eighty-five. He entered the employ of the Merchants' National Bank of Philadelphia when it was organized, in 1880, and since the merger of the Merchants' with the First National he was associated with the combined banks.
Dan J. Malone
Shenandoah, Pa., Oct. 15, Dan J. Malone, forty years old, manager of the Anthracite Brewing Company at Mount Carmel and the South Bethlehem Brewery at South Bethlehem, died at his home here today of pneumonia. He was president of the South Bethlehem Chapter of the American Red Cross.
George W. Channel
Pottsville, Pa. Oct. 15, George W. Channel died at his home in Port Carbon today. He taught school many years at Pinegrove and Port Carbon and was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born in 1839. The Rev. Wayne Channel, of Philadelphia and J. L. Channel, a Pottsville lawyer, are sons.

Lancaster, Pa., Oct. 15, Captain Samuel C. Seaber, eighty-one years old, a retired building contractor of Lititz and Civil War veteran, died today from a fractured skull suffered by falling downstairs. Samuel and Morris Seaber, of Philadelphia, are sons.
