ROBERT M. POPKE - Robert M. Popke, 74, of Wheeling, a former longtime resident of Highland Park, died of cancer Saturday in Evanston Hospital. Born in Chicago, Mr. Popke graduated from Schurz High School before serving four years in the U.S. Marines during World War II. Mr. Popke served in the Pacific as a radio operator on a transport plane. Following his service, Mr. Popke graduated from the American Television Institute in Chicago, where he learned to operate a video camera. In 1949, Mr. Popke began working as a field cameraman for WBKB-TV Ch. 7 in Chicago. He left in 1961 and worked in several sales positions involving radio equipment. Until four months ago, Mr. Popke worked part time as a real estate salesman. "He was so special," said his wife of 51 years, Patricia, who met her husband at a roller rink when she was 16 years old. "He never complained about anything." Other survivors include two sons, Bob and Brian; a daughter, Debbie Schmidt; a sister, Rita Pagana; and 11 grandchildren. A service will be private.
