23 Casualties Reported by Gen. Pershing, Exclusive of Those Lost on the Moldavia
Washington, May 25. - The War Department today gave out a list of
76 casualties in the American army abroad, including 53 lost on the
transport Moldavia on Thursday, bringing the total to 6,314. The list, in addition
to the Moldavia losses, included 4 killed in action, 4 died of wounds, 4
wounded severely, 8 slightly wounded, and 3 died of disease. The list of those
lost on the Moldavia will be found elsewhere in The Times.
The department also announced that Captain James Norman Hall of Colfax,
Iowa, the American aviator, previously reported missing, was now reported
prisoner. Captain Hall was brought down behind German lines
May 7, On May 20 press dispatches from the American army in Lorraine
stated that he was a prisoner in a German hospital, and that he had been
slightly wounded.
Two other commissioned officers are included in today's list. Lieutenant
Albert E. Johnson died of wounds. Lieutenant Lee Henry Knapp died of
disease.
