85 Casualties on General Pershing's List Include; 16 Men Killed in Action, 11 Dead of Wounds
Washington, June 2. - The War Department today gave out a list of
85 casualties in the American army abroad, bringing the total to 6,664. The
list included 16 killed in action, 11 died of wounds, 3 killed by accident, 4
missing in action, 5 wounded slightly, 29 wounded severely, 13 wounded to a
degree undetermined, and 4 died of disease.
Two commissioned officers were included. Captain Charles J. Biddle of
Philadelphia was wounded to a degree undetermined. Captain Biddle was
chief of a patrol of the Lafayette Squadron, who was recently reported lost
after a fight with Germans. On May 18 cable dispatches stated that he had
been found by French scouts in No Man's Land. His machine had been
wrecked, and he was taken to the rear for hospital treatment.
