Old Presbyterian Burying Ground, Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ
Transcription:
Located on the site of the original Presbyterian Church, the Old Presbyterian Burying Ground
is situated along Kings Highway adjacent to the Hendrickson Burying Ground not far from the current Middletown
Police Department but on the opposite side of the road, near the corner of Kings Ct. The plot is just about a quarter
of an acre. It is difficult to locate during the warm months when desiduous trees and overgrown brush hide the stones
from view of Kings Highway.
Dr. Stillwell noted "the tombstones in this cemetery are in singularly fine state of preservation, owing partly
to the exposed condition of the stones and protection thereby from dampness, and partly to the fine quality of the
stone itself." Alas, this is no longer true. The monuments are engulfed in a tangle of brush thick with trees.
Spider webs rule this damp, dark lot and made our visit less pleasant than it might otherwise have been. The monuments
have weathered badly since Dr. Stillwell's visit and are in dire need of preservation efforts. This
would make an excellent project for Sheriff Oxley's crew.
