Dorsett Town Historic Cemetery - Telegraph Hill Rd., Holmdel, Monmouth County, NJ

  Located in the woods along Telegraph Hill Road near a newly developed residential section, the Dorsett Town Historic Cemetery caught my eye while driving one summer day. The cemetery was almost completely hidden by overgrowth during July of 2001. Someone has apparently cleaned out much of the brush and briars as of April, 2002 when we visited and photographed gravestones.

Many of the markers are in pretty good condition but by and large the cemetery is in dire need of maintenance. Many stones are toppled or apparently missing. This cemetery purports to hold the grave of James Dorset, whose memorial states he settled in the area in 1676 which would make him one of the earliest settlers of Monmouth County.
