Christ Church Graveyard, Kings Highway, Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ

Transcription:

The Rev. Thomas Thompson, traveling through Old Monmouth in the mid 1700s, wrote an account of the state of the Episcopalian church which included the following comments regarding the church in Middletown:

"As to the church buildings I have found them all much out of condition, especially the church at Middletown, which was begun to be built but the year before I came there, and had nothing done on the inside, not even a floor laid. So that we had no place for the present to assemble in Divine worship, only an old house which had formerly been a meetinghouse."

Today the church stands as a monument to centuries past at the corner of Church Street and Kings Highway. The graveyard is well maintained though most of the inscriptions on the headstones have been melted away by time and weather. We were able to discern the names of the persons for whom they were erected about 90% of the time. However, dates of and ages at death were rather more difficult. In order to provide as complete a listing as possible, we have referenced Dr. Stillwell's "Miscellany" to fill in most of the blanks. Where we were unable to locate an individual, we have included exactly what Dr. Stillwell included and noted such. Where we were unable to read a stone, we have included the photograph of it but have not really attempted to connect it with an idividual. These unreadable stones are included at the end of the transcription.
