Old Center Cemetery, North Haven, New Haven County, CT
The "Old Center Cemetery" sits on the "Town Green" in the center of North Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut. It is located adjacent to
a beautiful stand of monuments honoring local veterans of all American wars, foreign and domestic, and the current "Green" at which certain town functions,
including musical concerts, are still conducted. The best way to reach the Town Green and Center Cemetery, if you are not familiar with the town,
is to enter the cross streets of Church St. and Broadway (or, St. John St.) into your GPS device.
The plaque erected by the town and state historical commission (below) describe the place far better than I can:
"A part of Indian land bought in 1638 for New Haven, North Haven was incorporated in 1786.
The center area was settled in 1670 by the Humiston, Thorpe, and Blakeslee families. A
separate parish or church society was formed in 1716. The Reverund James Pierpont gave
the Green for a meeting house, burial ground, and drill field. In the old cemetery lie
veterans of the Revolutionary War, including Sergeant Jacob Thorpe, killed at East Haven
in 1779. The Reverund Benjamin Trumbull, patriot and historian, lived here from 1760 to
1820. Here were born Ezra Stiles, President of Yale 1778-1795, and hobart B. Bigelow,
Governor of Connecticut 1881-1883. Theophilus Eaton, a founder of New Haven,
opened a brickyard here in 1640. Bog iron also was mined near Pool Road after 1656.
Where first was a humble farming village, small manufacturing enterprises soon sprang
up, heralding present-day North Haven as a thriving industrial and residential town."
Erected by the Town of North Haven and the Connecticut Historical Commission, 1978
The burial ground was active from about 1723 to about 1882. Most of the stones are, as you would expect, terribly eroded. Some few
are still legible. The tombstones were transcribed a long time ago and that work can be accessed at the
Hale Collection web page. Our interest was merely to
take about 150 photographs and post them here for your perusal. We hope you find this work somewhat useful.
Inquiries for genealogical and other information pertaining to the cemetery and those interred here would probably be best addressed by
the North Haven Historical Society as we do not have access to
any information other than that gleaned from these tombstones.
